4. ROBBER FLY SCANNING FOR PREY: This fly (Laphria thoracica) is called the Robber Fly. It is actually a mimic of the Bumble Bee. It is an example of Batesian mimicry; where the mimic resembles a “more dangerous creature”. These flies are, however, fairly nasty in their own right. Nikon F3 w/ Micro-NIKKOR 55mm. 5. ROBBER FLY SUCCEEDS: In this photo the fly, took off like a rocket, captured a bee in mid flight; then, to my amazement, returned to the very same leaf. I thought it might have been working for me. Once there, it began to suck the bee dry through its very sharp proboscis. Nikon 5100 w/ Micro-NIKKOR 40mm. File Size: 2812 x 1948. 6. FIREFLY SONG & DANCE: This female firefly (Photuris versicolor) is signaling her presence to an oncoming male. She does this with a single flash. They will eventually find each other and mate. When her mating is finished, she becomes what is, known as, an aggressive mimic. This means that she is able to mimic the signals of the females of different firefly species. 7. PHOTURIS FLASH PATTERNS: The male and the female locate each other with a series of flashes. The male signals with a group of triple flashes; while the female answers with a series of single flashes. The male flashes are apparent. The female flash, however, can be seen on the far left of the photo, about half way down. When they come together they will mate. 15. A BACKSWIMMER: This species of backswimmer, from the genus Notonecta, displays a very interesting bubble of air on its back. 16. PRAYING MANTIS FEEDING: This very large praying mantis (Stagmomantis carolina) feeds on a katydid. Nikon F3 w/ Micro-NIKKOR 55mm. File Size: 1614 x 2247. Price: File w/ 8.5 x 11 Print, $50.00

18. A HOVERFLY AT WORK:  Hoverflies are members of the insect family Syrphidae. Its species name is, most probably, (Eupeodes americanus).  These flies are prized by gardeners, since they are both prolific consumers of aphids, and very efficient pollinators. 20. SNAKES ALIVE: This Arizona Diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox), was found resting poolside. I, thereupon, removed it with my trusty snake stick and returned it to the wash. 25. MOUNTAIN GOAT: A magnificent Rocky Mountain goat (Oreamnos americanus) shines in the deep forest of Jasper National park in Albert, Canada. 26. MONSOON STORM: This storm rolled in from the east, just as the sun was setting in the west. The low angle of the sun allowed a marvelous, reddish tinge to be reflected from the falling rain. 49: INSECT IN AMBER: This photo shows a very small insect encased in a very small piece of amber. It was keyed out, properly, as a Humpbacked Fly from the family Phoridae. 55. THE OLD SWIMMING HOLE: A few years ago, we went back to visit our old swimming hole. What you see, is what we found. Maybe one, never really can go back.
